Laser Therapy
We at Newmarket Massage are proud to offer an exciting new therapy to our clinic that we feel will be helpful to many of our clients!
The Laser that we chose to purchase is called the BioFlex Laser - and trust us when we tell you NOT all Lasers are created equal.
Our BioFlex Laser uses superluminous and laser diodes (240 laser diodes in our model, the most that Meditech International has put in an array) to irradiate tissue affected by an injury or a disease process. When the appropriate light source is placed on the skin, photons which are particles of energy, penetrate multiple layers of tissue and are absorbed by a variety of intracellular molecules; this starts a cascade of beneficial physiological responses, resulting in the restoration of normal cell structure and function.
BioFlex Laser Therapy has been successfully utilized to treat a broad range of medical problems relating to the musculoskeletal system, arthritis, sports injuries, dermal ulcers and dermatological conditions.
Unlike many modalities and pharmacological solutions which only modulate symptoms or mask the perception of pain, Laser Therapy is directed to treat the underlying condition, curing the problem and thereby its attendant symptoms.
What is Laser Therapy?
Low Intensity Laser Therapy (LILT) is the use of light from a Low Intensity Laser Diode or an array of Superluminous Diodes to eliminate pain, accelerate healing and decrease inflammation.
Laser Therapy does not heat or cut tissue, unlike high intensity lasers. Many pharmacological treatments mask pain or only address the symptoms of the disease, Laser Therapy treats the underlying condition or pathology to promote healing. This means that the treatments are effective and the benefits of Laser Therapy are long lasting.
Is Laser Therapy safe?
Hundreds of research studies have shown Laser Therapy to be safe and effective. Laser Therapy is non-invasive, non-toxic and non-thermal. Unlike other forms of radiation, Laser Therapy is beneficial rather than harmful to tissue.
Are there any contraindications?
Yes. Laser Therapy should be avoided in the following instances:
-Over the womb for women in their first trimester of pregnancy
-Over a cancerous tumour
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments will vary with regard to the individual problem as every patient and condition responds to Laser Therapy uniquely. In a recent clinical report on over 1,000 patients treated with the BioFlex Professional Laser Therapy System, patients averaged slightly less than 10 treatments to resolve their condition. In some patients, 1 treatment is sufficient; however, on average, 3-25 treatments are required. In some cases, additional maintenance treatments may be recommended.
Frequency of Treatment:
In acute conditions, it may be appropriate to treat patients on a daily basis for 4 days or even longer. Evaluate each treatment response until symptoms subside. This approach is particularly applicable in cases of trauma, herniated discs and acute back problems.
Once the symptoms have diminished, treat three times per week until stable, then reduce to twice per week until improvement is at least 80% or more.
Weekly maintenance therapy may be required with degenerative osteoarthritis for two to three months or even longer in certain instances.
Longer treatment sessions in many situations results in a reduced number of treatments for each condition.
Completion of treatment in acute conditions generally requires one to three weeks. In chronic situations such as degenerative osteoarthritis, one to two months may be necessary. In degenerative osteoarthritis of the lumbosacral spine with stenosis of the spinal canal and/or the foramina, up to 50 treatments may be indicated over a protracted period of time.
Discharge of a Patient from Treatment Program:
Discharge is appropriate when the following criteria are met; i.e. the patient is:
Relatively asymptomatic
Fully functional
No medications are required
Quality of life and activity levels have returned to normal Generally from 1 to 30 or more treatments are required de- pending on the extent and severity of the pathology.

How Does the Technology Work?
The technology utilizes superluminous and laser diodes to irradiate diseased or traumatized tissue with photons. These particles of energy are selectively absorbed by the cell membrane and intracellular molecules, resulting in the initiation of a cascade of complex physiological reactions, leading to the restoration of normal cell structure and function.
In the short term, the body produces and releases beta-endorphins to control the sensation of pain. Plus, cortisol production is increased to combat the stress associated with the trauma or disease process.
Over the long term, ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production is increased resulting in improved cellular metabolism. DNA (deoxyribonucleicacid) production, the protein building block of tissue, is substantially increased. Neurotransmission is facilitated secondary to elevated levels of serotonin and aceytylcholine. Mitochondrial activity is stimulated resulting in cell replication for replacement, regeneration and repair of abnormal cells. And other cellular level changes take place.
The process results in the elimination of symptoms, including pain, and enhances the body’s immune system response, facilitating natural healing.
